Hero Headline Experiments

The headline is the single most-tested element on any landing page, for good reason: it is the first thing every visitor reads, it sets the frame for everything that follows, and changing it requires no engineering work. Clarity vs. Curiosity

Curiosity-based headlines (“The secret to doubling conversions”) generate clicks in ad copy but frequently underperform on landing pages, where the visitor has already arrived and needs orientation, not a hook. Problem-Focused vs. Solution-Focused

Headline Length

Short headlines (under eight words) perform well when the value proposition is already well-known or when the visual context (screenshot, product image) carries part of the meaning. A subheadline can also function as a preemptive objection handler. “No credit card required” placed directly beneath a trial CTA has repeatedly been shown to increase trial starts by 5–15%. Test whether moving this reassurance from the CTA button area to the subheadline position changes conversion. For some audiences, the earlier the friction removal, the better.

CTA Button Experiments

CTA Copy

CTA Color

Color is context-dependent. A button color that creates high contrast against your page background will outperform one that blends in. The specific hue matters less than the contrast ratio. The most common mistake is using a CTA color that matches the hero image or background, making the button invisible to skimmers. Test high-contrast alternatives before testing specific brand colors.

CTA Size and Position

A CTA that is too small to tap comfortably on mobile will underperform regardless of copy or color. Test a minimum touch target of 44×44px on mobile. Case Study Snippets

A mini case study — two to three sentences describing a customer’s situation, the action they took, and the measurable result — can outperform traditional testimonial formats for audiences evaluating a significant purchase. Value Proposition Experiments

The value proposition zone is where you make the detailed argument for your product. It is also where most landing pages lose visitors who were genuinely interested in the hero section but failed to find the specific feature or outcome they needed to proceed.

Feature List vs. Outcome List

Feature-focused copy describes what the product does: “Built-in statistical significance calculator.” Outcome-focused copy describes what the customer achieves: “Know exactly when to stop a test and declare a winner — no statistics degree required.” For early-stage products, features help orient technically sophisticated users. For mature markets with established alternatives, outcomes differentiate. Test both framings on your specific traffic.

Icons vs. Text

Icon-based feature sections increase visual scanability but risk sacrificing clarity when the icons are abstract. Test a version with descriptive icons against a text-only list and a version with no icons but stronger benefit copy. The winner is rarely what design intuition suggests.

Benefit Ordering

Place your strongest benefit first. Most visitors scan in an F-pattern: they read the first item, then skim the left edge of subsequent items. Test reordering your feature list so the highest-value or most-differentiating benefit appears in position one. This change alone can lift engagement with the section by 15–30% on heatmap analysis.

Form Experiments

Every field in a form is a micro-commitment that can cause a visitor to abandon. Form design is one of the highest-leverage optimization surfaces on pages that require data collection before conversion.

Field Count

The most reliable finding in form optimization research is that fewer fields increase completion rates. The question is: which fields are actually required at this stage of the funnel?
